A raincheck is a promise that an unaccepted offer will be taken up in the future.

This term comes from the sporting events in the US in the twentieth century. Whenever a sporting event is canceled due to rain, the spectators are given a ticket that allows them to attend another game at a future date.

This ticket is called a raincheck.

For example —

“I am going out of town so I can’t make it to dinner tomorrow. Can I take a rain check?”

It means that I can’t attend dinner tomorrow. But I’d like to have dinner with you some other time.

It means I am willing to accept your dinner invitation but, due to some reason, cannot attend on the proposed date. I would like to take up your offer at some future date.

I hope you guys found that interesting.
